Connect Cursor to your to-do list

Half of what you need to remember shows up while you are coding: the TODO you just wrote, the test you promised to look at, the message to send once the PR lands. Connect Cursor to AI TODO List and the agent adds those to your board in one sentence, without leaving the editor.

Cursor supports MCP natively and AI TODO List hosts an MCP server, so the setup is three lines in mcp.json and a browser sign-in. Everything added from Cursor is on the board in the browser right away.

What you need

  • An AI TODO List account. Sign in at the homepage with your email.
  • Cursor installed, on a version with MCP support (any recent release).

Your connection address

The setup below uses this address, the AI TODO List MCP server:

Step-by-step setup

  1. Add the MCP server

Open Cursor Settings → Tools & MCP → New MCP Server, which opens your mcp.json, and paste the config below. Save it in ~/.cursor/mcp.json to have AI TODO List in every project, or in .cursor/mcp.json inside one project.

    { "mcpServers": { "ai-todo-list": { "url": "https://api.minosin.com/api/aitodolist/v1/mcp" } } }
  2. Sign in with your email code

Cursor shows the new server as Needs authentication. Click Authenticate there, or in the agent chat the first time it asks. A browser tab opens with the AI TODO List sign-in page: enter your email, type the code we send you, and click Allow.

  3. Check the tools are listed

Back in Tools & MCP, the ai-todo-list server should be green with its tools enabled (add_task, list_tasks, complete_task and so on). The agent picks them up automatically in chat.

  4. Try it

In the agent chat, ask "what is on my to-do list?" or tell it to add something. It reads and changes your real board through the same tools ChatGPT and Claude use.

What you can do once connected

Inside an editor the connection is mostly about capturing without switching windows, and about turning code into tasks. Things people say mid-session:

  • Add a task: fix the flaky auth test.
  • Add a task for each TODO comment in this file, with the file path in the description.
  • What is due today?
  • I am done for today. Add a task that says where I left off, tagged work.
  • Tick off the CI runners task.
  • Show me everything tagged work that is still in To do.

Every change lands on the same board you see in the browser, right away. Tasks can be archived but never deleted by the assistant, so nothing is lost to a misread prompt.

Troubleshooting

The server stays on Needs authentication or shows a red dot.

Click the server entry to start the sign-in again. If the browser tab never opens, check Cursor's Output panel (MCP Logs) for the sign-in URL and open it yourself.

The server is connected in one project but missing in another.

A .cursor/mcp.json inside a project only applies to that project. Move the entry to ~/.cursor/mcp.json to have it everywhere.

The agent does not use the tools.

Make sure the server's tools are enabled in Tools & MCP, then name it in the chat: "use AI TODO List to add a task". Cursor's agent only reaches for a tool when the request calls for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does this also work with other MCP editors?

Yes. The config above is Cursor's mcp.json syntax, but the server address works with any MCP client: point your editor at the same URL and sign in the same way. Claude Code has its own one-command guide.

Is it safe to let an AI assistant touch my to-do list?

The connection is limited on purpose: the assistant can add, edit, move, complete, reopen and archive tasks, but it can never delete one. Archived tasks keep their history and can be restored. You can disconnect the assistant at any time from its own connector settings.

Do I need a paid AI TODO List subscription?

Yes, using the board from an assistant needs an active subscription, the same one subscription that covers the web app and every connection. The yearly plan starts with a free month, so you can set the connection up and use it for a month before anything is charged.

What is MCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants talk to outside tools. AI TODO List hosts an MCP server, so any assistant that supports it can read and change your board without a plugin or an API key. You sign in once with an email code.

Do changes made by the assistant show up in the web app?

Yes, right away. The assistant works on the same board you see in the browser, so a task added from a chat is on the board before you switch tabs, and a task you drag to Done in the browser is what the assistant reads next time you ask.
